Common questions
Questions about the de-coder
Is anything I type sent to a server?
No. Encoding, decoding, hashing and formatting all run entirely in your browser. No value is transmitted, logged or stored — the page loads once and computes locally after that.
Which hashing algorithms are supported?
MD5, SHA-1, SHA-256 and SHA-512. MD5 and SHA-1 are considered broken and should no longer be used for security purposes; they are here because existing tracking setups and interfaces still rely on them. For anything new, SHA-256 is the right choice.
Why does Base64 fail on some characters?
The browser's Base64 encoder only handles Latin-1 characters. Umlauts and ß are part of that set and work. The euro sign, emoji or Cyrillic text make it fail with an error. That behaviour is kept deliberately unchanged so the output matches existing implementations.
What is the difference between formatting and decoding?
Decoding reverses an encoding — %20 becomes a space again. Formatting leaves the content alone and changes only how it is presented: JSON is indented, and a query string is shown as a JSON object. Formatting also accepts untidy input such as unquoted keys or trailing commas.
